About Me

Counselling can "create a clearing in the dense forest of your life." - Martha Postlethwaite

I believe it's important for you to find a person that you feel comfortable and safe with. This will be different for everyone so hopefully this information will help you decide if I might be the right person for you.

I hope to be a calm, caring and courageous person; someone who is not afraid to witness your pain and sit in it with you, whilst carrying hope for brighter days. I will listen to try to understand your world. I will help you gently explore your feelings and beliefs and go deeper into what might be at the root of your distress. I will encourage you to find your glimmers and sparkles that will lead to your own solutions.

My various life experiences have taught me that everyone suffers and that everyone’s suffering is different but equally valid. We can often amplify our pain by blaming ourselves. We say I “shouldn’t” be feeling like that or I “should” be able to get over it. But we are all human. So, I believe that being heard, understood and offered kindness can make an incredible difference. Especially if we are finding it hard to give ourselves that compassion.

I am LGBTQ+ and gender diversity affirming. I have family and professional experience of Autism and understand the additional challenges that being neurodivergent can bring.

In my spare time I enjoy running and walking with my dog on the Moors or the beach. I also love to watch a foreign language crime drama if I get the chance or curl up with a good book!

Experience

Working within the NHS and in private practice, I have counselled a wide range of people on a variety of issues. Some of these have included; anxiety, depression, relationship issues, bereavement, self-confidence, trauma, adverse childhood experiences, PTSD, OCD, emetophobia and identity issues.

I have also worked for the charity Young Devon in secondary schools and in their community hub office in Plymouth. This work has involved working with young people 11 years and upwards on issues such as anger, relationships, emotion regulation, anxiety, self esteem and bereavement.

Before training as a counsellor, I worked in a variety of business roles, including Marketing and Publishing and 15 years as a secondary school teacher. In this time I witnessed the huge increase in mental health problems in adults and young people and wanted to be part of the solution. For me teaching at its core has always been about relationships and communication and I have enjoyed putting these skills to use in the area of mental health.

I am part of the team at the Dragonfly Wellbeing Centre in Plymouth, and the Wellness Rooms in Tavistock, where I offer in-person therapy. I also work increasingly online throughout the UK. I am trained in online work and I believe it offers an equally effective way of delivering therapy, often more accessible and convenient, particularly for busy, working people.

I really love being a counsellor, as I get to meet the most interesting, wonderful people. Seeing my clients grow in confidence and witnessing the positive changes in their lives is just the best thing! If you think we might be a good fit contact me now via email, text or the contact form here, for a FREE no pressure chat on the phone or via video call.
